[«Освещать» – это серия молитвенных размышлений для тех, кому, как и мне, нравится простое, но не упрощенное Евангелие Иисуса Христа. Цель каждого из них – осветить ключевой, несущий свободу аспект великого спасения.]

«И Он, придя, обличит мир о грехе и о правде и о суде: о грехе, что не веруют в Меня» (Иоан. 16:8-9).

Что приходит к Вам на ум, когда вы думаете о том, что такое грех? Разве наши мысли не устремляются, если мы это допускаем, к определению безрассудства или зла? Если мы потратим слишком много времени, задавая себе этот вопрос, мы можем сами оказаться в опасности того, что многие из нас считают грехом, поскольку наш разум может отклониться от безопасного берега.

Наш опыт говорит нам о том, что, когда мы нарушаем хорошее правило, или даже такое правило, с которым мы не согласны, при условии, что оно было авторитетным, грех преступает заповедь. Мы были бы правы в этом предположении, поскольку само Писание дает на него ответ, по крайней мере, частично, просто утверждая:

«Всякий, делающий грех, делает и беззаконие; и грех есть беззаконие» (1-е Иоан. 3:4).

Однако согласно евангельскому посланию именно из-за греха, который был в полной мере раскрыт Божьим законом, пришел Христос (Гал. 3:24). Он пришел ради беззаконников, грешников. Он пришел для тех, кто был под законом (иудеи) и тех, кто даже не надеялся на закон и Ветхий завет (язычники).

Кто бы это ни был: иудей или язычник, – соблюдение заповедей, даже хороших, не могло не привести ни к чему другому, как к самому сердцу Нового завета Бога с нами.  Что, на самом деле, хорошо!

Как пишет апостол Павел в послании к Римлянам 10:4: «Потому что конец закона — Христос, к праведности всякого верующего».

Более того, Павел еще больше развивает эту тему в своем послании к Галатам, говоря о том, что все, кто полагают, что внешним повиновением заслужат праведность, непреднамеренно прокляли сами себя (Гал. 3:10). Почему? Потому что ту праведность, то оправдание, ту благодать и благоволение, которыми Бог желает наделить человечество, никто не может заслужить.

Любовь Бога – это не продукт, который можно купить или заслужить.

Она была дарована в Личности, и Вы знаете кто это! Иисус прожил совершенную жизнь, и Его совершенная смерть стала искупительной жертвой, ведь Агнец Божий – это дар нам.

Она дарована всем из совершенного милосердного Отцовского сердца, и ее можно беспрепятственно получить одним единственным путем – только верой.

«Ибо благодатью вы спасены через веру, и сие не от вас, Божий дар: не от дел, чтобы никто не хвалился» (Еф. 2:8,9).

В первом упомянутом здесь месте Писания, Иисус говорит о Духе Святом, Которого Он пошлет Своим ученикам после Своего вознесения. Дух Святой обличит мир о грехе.

Затем он конкретизирует действительное значение или происхождение этого «греха». Он не говорит о том, что Дух Святой будет странствовать по земле, обличая нарушителей закона, но скорее тех, кто не верит. Он не будет обличать грабителей в ограблении или прелюбодеев в их любовных похождениях. Очевидно, что здесь речь идет о принимающих корыстные решения, если их совесть все еще чувствительна, они в свое время будут сожалеть о своих действиях.

Однако Дух Святой главным образом стремится не к обвинению, Он стремится обнаружить веру или ее отсутствие. Он, Дух Святой, обличает мир в его неверии.

Интересно, не правда ли? Почему неверие имеет такое значение для третьей Личности Троицы?

Весь мир разрушен, непокорен, потерян. Мы уже грешники. Все согрешили. Потому все умерли без надежды в этом мире (Римл. 5:12). В этом состоит христианская точка зрения в соответствии с евангельским посланием. Благая весть приходит только после плохой новости, иначе говоря, истины.

Единственная надежда для человечества – это новый завет, новые отношения, утвержденные на новых основаниях. Бог больше не борется с человеком в отношениях послушания и непослушания. Благоволение, благословение Бога, прощение и примирение, предлагаемые в Евангелии, основаны на вере или неверии в обетование Бога во Христе.

Мы приходим к Богу, и Он приходит к нам, только через веру в Иисуса. Теперь значение имеет не человеческое усилие, но праведность Христа.Потому мы уже не рабы закона, но Христос, претерпевший наказание закона, освободил нас от него (Гал. 4:5, Римл. 7:14). Теперь мы сыновья и дочери по вере (Гал. 3:26, 2-е Кор. 6:18).

Верить, доверять, примиряться, возлагать свою веру на Иисуса как на воплощенную во плоти вседостаточную жертву – вот этого ищет Бог в то время, как Евангелие достигает народы. Дух Святой утверждает это послание, когда его провозглашают, и в то же время обличает сердца, побуждая к ответу, когда оно достигает слуха заключенного в плен сердца.

Если устами твоими будешь исповедовать и сердцем твоим ВЕРИТЬ (Римл. 10:9).

ВЕРУЙ в Господа Иисуса Христа и будешь спасен (Деян. 16:31).

Разговаривая с Никодимом, Иисус делает следующее утверждение:

«Верующий в Него не судится, а неверующий уже осужден, потому что не уверовал во имя Единородного Сына Божия» (Иоан. 3:18).

Итак, что же такое грех? Разве по своей сути это не отвержение грядущего Сына?

Просто назвать различные незаконные или злые дела не получится. Грех – это результат непринятия Иисуса Христа. Это отрицание Спасителя, умершего за нас. Совершаемые «грехи» по плоти – не что иное, как плод, которые уходит своими корнями в неверие. Истинная причина всего зримого греха – неверующее, а значит невозрожденное сердце. Если действия человека, независимо от того, насколько они благородны и справедливы, вытекают из сердца, полного неверия, то они являются грехом.

На самом деле, грех несет разрушения. Грех реален. Но для того, чтобы уничтожить его смертоносное действие, мы должны принять Божью защиту – веру.

«Так и вы почитайте себя мертвыми для греха, живыми же для Бога во Христе Иисусе, Господе нашем» (Римл. 6:11).

Борьба с грехом только лишь при помощи нравственного поведения и жесткой дисциплины – это тщеславие. Мы ощущаем свободу по вере в Христа и Его силу!

Если мы отвергаем Иисуса, мы совершенно и полностью осуждены. Предположить, что долг неверующих состоит в том, чтобы исправить свои жизни, моральные принципы и перестать постоянно «грешить» – значит исказить евангельскую весть. Ничто не сможет угодить Богу, если Его Сын – единственный источник благодати – отвергнут.

На жизнь, что сам я не прожил,

Вы об этом слышали? О единственном источнике благодати? Вот где в христианстве исторически сложилось место преткновения. Мы хотим получить благодать Христа, но обрамляем ее святым благочестием, как будто это обязательное требование, а не просто вытекающий результат.

Я верю, что Священное Писание учит нас тому, что неверие является первичным грехом и основной причиной нашего греха. И наоборот, я полагаю, что дар веры – это основа, первопричина нашей праведности. Без веры никто не праведен (Римл. 3:22). Веруя, мы больше не являемся грешниками. Мы будем падать, терпеть неудачи, но наш завет хранит наши отношения с Отцом, основанные только на подвиге Христа. Поверить в это – значит осознать свободу, которую предназначил для нас Христос (Иоан. 8:32, Гал. 5:1).

Из источника нашей веры в Иисуса Христа истекает плод нашей жизни. Из источника неверия происходят дела плоти. Может ли христианин грешить? Конечно. Мы ни в коем случае не претендуем на моральное превосходство, мы утверждаем Христа, и мы хотим преображаться по Его подобию. Может ли неверующий быть праведным? Исключено.

Евангельское послание – великая новость для тех, кто признает свой грех и принимает Иисуса как свою праведность. Это ужасная новость для тех, кто отказывается от пути благодати ради чего-то другого.

Освещай наши сердца, Господь Иисус Христос, сокровищами, сокрытыми в Твоем великом Евангелии!

Sticks & Stones

“Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”  Matt 21:44

We live in an opinion saturated culture.

Humanity has always had opinions, but never before had the outlet and platforms available to voice them like we do today.  Think about it.  For centuries, it was only the highly educated, those devoting their entire lives to particular topics that warranted being heard.

With the printing press, opinions took flight.  If you had gift for writing that others appreciated, or at least some money, you could present your opinions to the world.  These days the only prerequisite for disseminating the depths of our  wisdom seems to be at minimum, a functional finger.  Click, like, swap, comment, post, done.

Opinions.  We all have them.  We hold some loosely, some with a firm grip of death.  We think we’re right, or we wouldn’t hold them at all.  If we become convinced of a different opinion, we quietly swap opinions, we trade up.  The older we get, the longer we hold our opinions, the more difficult it seems to negotiate change.  Opinions can become convictions, they become part of our identity, especially if they are cultural, passed from generation to generation.

Jesus entered a world of opinions.  Most of the opinions held against Him were hostile, particularly among the religious order.  The Law of Moses, the ceremonies, traditions, the promises contained in the Old Covenant, so it seemed to the opinionated, stood in contradiction to the character and nature of Jesus.  There was no convincing the religious order that imposter of a carpenters son was the promised Messiah.

Look what happens when we hold too firmly to an opinion and we are unwilling to search things out. We consider ourselves higher, we surge with a dignified pride at our obvious correct thinking.  We place the person or thought we disagree with beneath us, subject to our judgement.  We move towards hostility, even fighting the creator of the universe, thinking we somehow stand a chance?  When opinion becomes arrogance!

This was the attitude of the Jewish leaders as they listened, and even began to scorn & plot against Jesus.  Jesus begins to warn them of their folly, and says some incredible things that we too can learn from today.

When you reject Jesus, you are rejecting the chief cornerstone from which your eternity is determined. Your opinion of Christ does in fact matter, a lot!

I see a generation gleefully engaging their opinions at every chance, but taking very little care over their opinion of Christ.  They approach the person of Jesus with a trite frivolity, like reviewing the latest movie – I give him 3 stars.  When is the last time anyone ever said, “What do I think about Jesus?  That’s a great question, I’ve never thought of that before!” Everyone has an opinion, but few have legitimate conviction – this is both the challenge and opportunity for those of us journeying in His grace.

For many, all that matters in this life is what we can taste, touch, and see now.  We work to consume on our earthly appetites.  So focused is our generation on clicking, watching, eating, listening, that Jesus becomes just another point of opinion.

Jesus says He is the Stone, and that anyone who falls upon this Stone will be broken to pieces.

According to commentaries, Jesus is eluding here to the practice of stoning.  A man, if caught deserving of this corporal punishment, would be taken to a cliff, or pit of some kind with a significant depth and rocky foundation.  The criminal would then be beaten and thrown to their death.

Jesus is saying, I think, something like this, “Guys, your attempted injury of my character, your rejection of me and evil intentions, they do not effect reality.  I am Who I say I am.  When you reject me, it’s as if you come at me as brittle sticks, whacking away at a boulder – the boulder wins, your rejection of me, is in actuality, your own destruction!”

What’s incredible here, is that Jesus doesn’t finish here.  He adds, “anyone on whom the stone falls, will be crushed.”

The Jews, if seeing the person whom they intended to kill by throwing to their death is still alive would then find a large rock and hurl it down on the criminal.  The rock would be heavy enough that two men could barely carry it.  It would ensure the finality of destruction, justice would come crashing down on the poor fellow.

Jesus is not only saying that rejection of Him will be of no avail and even harm you in the process – but that in the end, the same Stone you are rejecting in this life, is going come-a-hurling down on you in judgment.

Everyone who refuses to open their heart and opinion to the reality of Jesus Christ as the Creator will be crushed under His perfect judgment.

Our opinions matter, I’m thankful for the freedom to express.  Nowhere is our opinion more important than hen we consider the historical, miracle working, undeniable importance of Jesus Christ.  If ever we should develop and hold firmly convictions, it’s in this area.  If Jesus is right, no other opinion comes close.

I would argue that all our opinions, on every single subject derives it’s source from the well of this opinion. I take a peek online and see articles, blogs, comments, swirling around like a tempest of rage and confusion.  Everyone is convinced they should be heard, and is heard, yet is anyone really listening? We are talking to our social networks which act like mirrored reflections of our shallow soul.  A thousand voices, an angry and confused world.

It’s in this context that our generation must enter and insert the truth of the Gospel.  Get people away from their computers where they hide and have found a certain boldness in their many opinions.  Love them, share about the love of God in Christ – He alone will bring order to their chaos, and deliver them from delusion.

If we embrace Jesus Christ, we simultaneously surrender our posture of pride.  When we embrace Christ, we’re no longer the ones from on high boasting in our opinions, coming at Christ with our sticks as if He was just another topic to nail down.

It’s what He thinks that matters, His opinion over us is what we live for.

He is a God of love, of compassion, of second chances.  If you have an opinion of Christ but have not surrendered your life to Him, consider the dangerous situation you are in.  You judge Him incorrectly, you are the stick breaking upon the eternal rock.  Your rejection of Him does only harm to you, and will do even greater if you finish this life His enemy.

Scripture says those that reject Him are foolish, even stupid (void of basic sense).  The foot of the foolish are dangling in slippery places.  Sin is deceptive in nature.   Under it’s influence and power, nobody knows they are deceived.  It’s the power of the Gospel, in the hearts of those it’s redeemed that will win our generation.

“Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God.  Forgive me for the times I’ve fought against you in my pride and ignorance. Help me to build my life on the Rock that is Jesus!”  Amen

Our family has 1yr multi-entry visas to Belarus!

Today, like every year it seems, Ukrainians remind me of July 4th – they are keenly aware of the holiday.

They really enjoy their own summer holidays, they have around 20, including the entire month of August.  Independence however is fresh on everyone’s mind here.

When they congratulate me on the day, it’s with a type of sincere envy that convicts me – my generation knows very little of freedoms cost.

We’ve been back now a week.  I was in Kiev today picking up your visas for Belarus and taking Noah to the clinic – he’s developed some sort of rash since arriving back.

We’ve been given such favor with our business visas, and developed some friends along the way.  When I pull out our stack of passports for processing, people think I’m a tourist agent.

Our plan is to be in Minsk for the start of YFM in September, at least for a couple of months.  Until then we have several trips happening – next week flying to Minsk for some planning, then first of August again with Roger Jonker with World Challenge.  Roger is the husband of David Wilkerson’s daughter and overseas the widows feeding programs worldwide.

This year we have 5 full time interns, some part timers showing up for 1 week stints, 4 staff and many visitors coming!

We’re also organizing several projects in July, one for Widow’s and one for a children’s camp (special needs) up north potentially as an outreach for our interns.

Yesterday the summer Interns from Club 180 started arriving.  We have 5 so far full time, 16-17yrs old from surrounding villages.

Serving with us this July are a mix of Ukrainian, American and Belorussian friends coming at various stages to share, lead morning worship. Our ultimate desire is to see the Holy Spirit work, move on all hearts, illuminate Jesus.

After being back for a week, I’m looking at a lot of things that need attention.  Our park didn’t finish itself when I was gone.. and now weeds have overwhelmed the playground area.  We weren’t able to buy sod last fall, nor this spring, so unfortunately under the forest of weeks is just top soil – we don’t have tools like the west to spread/roll & pack the ground.

People don’t grow grass here, it’s a waste of gardening space and they live off their gardens – so not a lot of knowledge to help either.  It’s pretty bad when I might know as much as anyone here about grass.. if you saw my own yard, you’d pray for us.   I’d still love to lay down sod, but it’s around $1,200 (we got a quote from Kiev in the fall).  We don’t have that kind of money, it may take a while to get something use-able and open it.

Please pray and thank you for your continued support – God is so gracious to allow us to be away for 2 months, and things still moving ahead… but several things we need to see God do before we leave.  We love our team, the young and old (widows) hearts He’s allowing us to engage with the love of Christ – we pray it will only leap forward in the fall, not take any steps back.

In the meantime, the Skatepark area is used every day, kids playing b-ball and learning how to skate.  I was watching a mom and her little toddler the other day trying to skate up the ramp – the kid fell, was crying, the mom was like, “Get up, be a man…”  The Cafe has amazing reviews (4.5 out of 5) on Google, and so many tourists on the weekend.  May was our best month of the year, we only lost $200-300 – however June/July look to be challenging again.

Interestingly, they tore down the local bus station across from the Cafe while we are gone.. guess what they are building?  We hear a new bus station, with a hotel and, wait for it.. pizza cafe!  If it’s true, imitation is the biggest form of flattery right?  I rejoice in the continued changes in our town – the families hanging out together, the bars less full if open at all – so much more light downtown.  It’s cool to be a part of that.

We’ve been cleaning our yards, cutting grass, and survived 2-3 days of +85F weather, it was legit hot.  It’s cooled down now, gorgeous.  Tucker’s luggage (box of his computer parts) arrived yesterday after getting lost en route – he’s happily assembling!
