Medium Rare

It’s rare to find a good steak in Ukraine.  This week Daniel and I have enjoyed the southern hospitality, and the steak.  It’s been tremendous to visit with our friends. I tell them that I miss them more now then when in Ukraine, in Ukraine we are so busy and ‘out of sight out of mind’, but seeing them this trip, talking with them, praying with them, and eating with them, it’s been a reminder of how great God blesses us through sincere friendship.

We shared at Crossroads Community Church (www.ccclongview.com) this Sunday, and have had a full slate of meetings, lunches, and gatherings with folks from work and church.  It’s amazing to think it’s been almost a year since our family left, and a reminder how we must number our days, they are racing past us.

I’ve been asked the same set of questions about 200 times, they are:

-Do you like it over there?
-What is the most difficult thing you’ve experience about living in Ukraine?
-How is your Russian going?
-How are Deb and the kids adjusting?
-What do you do all day?
-When will you be coming back?
-What do Ukrainians think about Obama?
-What’s the food like?
-How much is a ticket?

I feel like a walking infomercial, I don’t know how politicians do it.  I’m like, “hey, read our blog people!”.  🙂  Well, no pictures at the moment, you all should know what Texas looks like anyway.

We are now off to visit some more friends, tomorrow is our last day.  Today we interviewed with the News Herald, a local publication we’ve been in before, and did an interview with CBS 19, our friend Wilton Johnson who we are badgerign to come over with the June trip, to an ‘on the scene’ promo of the town we are living in.    Thursday we fly to NYC, visiting with some friends and Times Square Church.  A couple days in the big apple, then off to Kiev to re-unite with our families, we miss you!

Coming back with zip lock bags honey, and all those other things that are precious in the land of Sola.

We’re Off!

Well, it’s late Wednesday evening, and we leave in the morning for Texas.  I haven’t even started packing.  We’ve been busy Monday/Tuesday registering this business, waiting in lines, running in circles, and getting stamps.  Today we went to Kiev to meet with the owner of, get this, over 20 buildings here in RZ… a partnership of certain fellows ‘somehow’ managed to end up with all these buildings, in many towns like RZ, during the fall of communism.  We had a nice meeting, shared our desire for the development of a “Family Center”, the rest is up to God, as we continue to trust and pray for His will.  Join us!

We just finished our first Home Group with the Christians here, split between Dan’s house and ours.  It was good, we studied “What God’s Word says about God’s Word”, as a basis for scriptures ultimate authority moving forward.  I pray that we are encouraged, and challenged in the days ahead to more accurately handle God’s truth.

Well, must be packing, please keep in your prayers this week:

– Deb, my wife. She will be managing the home, 6 kids, and general anarchy that is life in Ukraine without me for 10 days.
– Travel safety and connections, luggage to make it, all those things we take for granted.. until stuff falls apart:).
– Fruitful meetings during the week.

Thank you all that encourage and have been keeping up with us.  We love you-

Trip to Texas & NYC

rodge-on-wire.jpg

[Broderic (blue) and Bronwyn climbing AIRQUEST, they didn’t even have to sign a waiver!]

I’m taking a quick trip to Longview, Texas next week.  Feb 27-March 10.   I’ve been planning to take a trip sometime this winter, but the timing hasn’t worked out.  I’ll be speaking at Crossroads on Sunday, March 1, it’ been 10 months since I saw my church family, and I look forward to seeing them again soon.   The trip will allow me to catch up with the guys at work as well.  Daniel is coming with me on this trip, together we’ll be sharing what God seems to be doing here in Rzshyschiv, and the opportunities it’s opening up for outside involvement.   If you are in the area, we hope to see you, and be encouraged by what God is doing in your life as well.

Boy, where do I start.  It’s been 3 weeks since the last post.  I’ll list some bullet points of activity to catch you up with us:

  • Met with Mayor, we have his blessing to pursue a “Family Center” in the town, and disclosed our heart/purpose with him.
  • Mayor encouraged us to consider some of the city owned buildings for use, possibly purchase.  We’ve investigated them, only one is centrally located, and would require significant renovations, might be easier to start over.
  • Visited with the associate of the owner of several buildings in town (lives in Kiev, big businessman), the main building we want is ‘not on the table’, however they showed us 2 others, both viable and recently on the market.  The economic troubles here in Ukraine are substantial, the worst in Europe, opening up more property choices.  They are all in Soviet conditions, plumbing, and substantial renovations necessary to be usable for our purposes.
  • Registering two organizations this month, a Charity “Missions Network Ukraine”, and a business “Economic Business Partnership”.  Many reasons for this, but to purchase property, work with other charities, and run business (cafe, family center etc.), this is necessary.  Svetlana is working hard, so much paperwork, requirements, and loopholes, she is a blessing indeed.
  • We’ll be able to officially ‘invite’ foreigners to work, and serve in various capacities as an officially registered ‘Ukrainian’ organization.   We’ll also sponsor our own family, inviting ourselves and taking more control over our visa situation.
  • My truck is a challenge, it will cost $25k just to register it officially in Ukraine, so we’re forced to drive to Belarus (3 hrs away) every 60 days for a fresh stamp.  We’re hopefully going to get temporary plates in April, they’ll be good for 1 yr, and cost around $1,000.  That won’t be so bad, our truck is such a blessing, we’re able to go everywhere in town, just today I pulled out another lady who was stuck on a hill.
  • We’re going to host a June Strategic Missions Trip- this trip will be for business and civic leaders, to come and stay ‘with’ those of similar positions in town.  They will stay with the locals, and have a wonderful opportunity to build relationships with those we’ve gotten to know.  We will host some events during that week in coordination with the city.  Please pray for this trip, I’m excited about talking to some people in Texas about joining this trip.
  • The Medical Trip from NYC has been postponed until the fall.
  • We’ve been asked to participate in several local events in the spring/summer.
  • Browny turned 10!  Tucker turned 6! Clark turned 3!
  • Our basement is almost finished, another 2 weeks, we have 3 guys working on it.
  • We start “Home Groups” this coming Wed, 2 groups meeting on Wed nights, one in our basement (hurry guys !!).
  • Deb is amazing, she’s cooked all day today with Cassie, they cooked and froze 19 meals… we eat, and feed a lot of people.
  • I’ve reconnected with Chris Bennet, Matt Mason and Bob Stone, and together we’ve formed a monthly Skype call, for prayer and encouragement.  Old friends from CFNI, neat how God has worked in each of our lives.
  • We are transferring our house into our name, this will cost $3-5k, but get everything officially in our name, currently still in our good friends name, Andrei Murzin who saved the day by allowing us to do this last spring.   This process takes several months, and has more paperwork, days in lines, and folks with their hands out (gift please) than you could imagine… but it’s all normal here in Ukraine!
  • Have made some contacts with an orphanage ministry, looking forward to having lunch with them.
  • We had our first public (not in Dan’s house) gathering last week with the church at the restaurant.  The kind owner has donated the use of the room to us, and even donated the coffee/tea, we tried to pay and she declared, “I cannot accept this, for God’s glory.”  She sat in during our meeting/worship.
  • Have developed a master list of available Russian materials for study/personal devotion.  Through that, met some brothers in Chernigiv, that we actually already knew, but didn’t know they started a publication company.  They’ve published several Piper, Grudem, Stott books (or planning to), good authors and material that the church here would really benefit from.  I am excited to help them, they publish and sell everything at cost, there is a great need for evangelical material that is affordable, and available.
  • Russian vocabulary has reached 250-300, we have been told by a professional translator in Moscow, that 800 is the threshold, from there things are much easier.  We need to press in to our studies more.  The kids are doing great with this, fresh young sponge brains!

Pray for a productive week for us, we have a lot to do before our trip, ordering materials in Russian to pick up in the states and bring back.  Also pray our meetings and fellowship are fruitful.  We’ll be stopping in to Times Square Church on our way back, visiting Deb’s parents for a couple of days, and some friends at TSC.

deb-painting.jpg

[Beautiful Deb, not sure about the painting.  Our neighbor Sergei invited us to his gallery opening in Kiev last week, he’s a pretty famous dude I guess, it was packed]

Sorry that was pretty boring, just a list of what’s going on, I’d rather share my heart on a more personal level, maybe next time.  I pray you are staying fervent in your relationship with Christ, and refusing to live a life that is dull.  Put yourself in a position of dependence for Christ, where He has to come through, and you will find life to be more enjoyable then living to please yourself.   We are enjoying life, watching God open doors, motivate hearts and it’s amazing to think how the difficult things here, are becoming less daunting and the peace of God is ruling more of our hearts.  We thank Him for it too, because He is the gas, or petrol they call it in Ukraine, in our tank.

Longing to see you, and eat a steak!

What About Bob?

b-and-d.JPG

One of our favorite movies.  This week, the real ‘bob’ in the flesh visited us, live from Worcester , MA (outside Boston).  Bob & Dennis Stone were friends of ours during our days at CFNI (1992-1994).

Thanks to facebook, we’ve begun reconnecting with good friends that we had lost track of over the years.  This connection resulted in a plane ticket and week of catching up, re-telling funny stories, and encouragement.  It was so nice to share struggles, and praise God together for the things ‘He has done’, in the last 15yrs.  Bob had visited the former USSR during college, and still remembered how to say some things.  It didn’t keep him however from being a tourist for a day, here he is with a Russian Sea Border Patrol hat, sized for his 8yr old son.

with-hat.JPG

It was a tremendous week.  We met with so many people in the town.  We designed a calendar (thanks Jon @ Cypress!) with pictures from the special Christmas Dinner, and tried to get each of their pictures sprinkled somewhere within the months.  We had them printed at Kinkos in Boston, then Bob grabbed them and brought them over.  We then used this opportunity to visit each official again, which resulted in unexpected, and frankly overwhelming responses of gratitude, long conversations, tea, a tour, and even a full course lunch.  I personally underestimated the impact of this dinner/event, and have been inspired by the gestures of friendship and continued interaction.  It’s difficult, without writing a novel of a blog, to describe each of the unique relationships, but I feel I need to communicate a couple so you too, can give praise to God with us, and continue praying.

Our police chief has been a friendly fellow from the start.  He was based in Cuba during the Soviet Union in the 80’s, so he has some exposure to other cultures.  I find this makes a big difference when talking to various locals.  If they’ve every been to a foreign country, they are much more comfortable, and even confident to engage in conversation with a foreigner.  I guess this is true in any country, but I think especially to those who have been under the iron thumb and dissalusionment of communism.  Anyway, he served Bob, Svetlana and I some ultra strong coffee, espresso like… and we spent 30 minutes talking about a variety of issues.  He invited us to ‘please stop in anytime’, and plans to meet up with Daniel soon as well.

Pictured below, the associate director of one of the 4 technical colleges in town, treated us to a tour of the school.  After the tour, he instructed us to go into this small back room, where some ladies brought us soup, bread, then a full plate of Ukrainian food (not sure what it was, but it was good, even the beats).   Prior the meal he also took us on a small tour of their history museum, located in the school.  It displayed original coinage, army gear, traditional cloths/emblems, and general community artifacts.   He instructs in the army, and used to serve in the USSR as a commander of some sort.  We were very blessed, not just for the tour and food, but to hear his heart for the kids, and his own faith.  There are some opportunities in the school for further involvement that we will be looking into which could be interesting.at-director-lunch.JPG

We found each person, without exception, exceedingly friendly and even encouraging discussion.  Both Bob and I, after the first day were just looking at each other, thinking the same thing, “Wow, what is going on?”  These are the kind of inroads to a community, through relationships, that can take years in some cases, and it’s only been a few months.  God has something special planned for this town, and opening hearts, perhaps for a season, who knows, but we must be faithful moving forward.   I was invited to call and basically invite myself anytime to speak at another technical college, to their programmer/computer classes.  I will be following up with this soon.  The cultural director inquired if we could have the same ‘girls from Khargalyk” come to their National Women’s Day in the spring, which is a pretty big national event (their ‘mothers day’, but bigger).  She asked if they could come and sing about God, and love… basically anything positive.  They are without much funds this year, due to the economic crisis, and looking for any involvement we can provide to make their day of celebration special.  It will take place in their brand new facility downtown, and most of the town will participate.  We have an opportunity to help in other ways too, for example their sponsor can no longer provide a flower for each woman, a tradition that I’ve been told is very special for the ladies.  I need to find out how much this costs, and I would like our church here to provide this, another way to show our support and also involvement in the community, helping to pass them out etc.  I could go on, seriously, please pray for the church here, that they catch a vision for how BIG God is, and how He desires to move upon hearts, and to do this through them.  God desires a strong, united body to work through.

Boy, my fingers are tired and I haven’t even told you about the Non-Profit Org we are starting here in Ukraine.  It will be an extension of Missions Network, which we just completed registering last year in the States.  It will be a conduit of resources through humanitarian, economic development and church networking in Ukraine, and Lord willing other countries in the region.  I have had this desire for many years, to start this network, each time He reveals the next step at the appropriate time, I don’t have a master plan, but He does, so we’ll take these next steps, and begin registering… it might take a year, the paper trail, legal issues, and departments we have to go through are pretty long, but God has provided Svetlana, whom, for whatever reason, actually enjoys the legal paperwork process!

One of the first projects I believe we’ll be working towards is the purchase (or long term lease) of a facility downtown.  Here below is a picture of our downtown.  I’ve shared in the past the desire to get ‘something’ happening downtown in terms of outreach and/or potential business.  I’m getting a little crazy here folks, but I believe God wants us to pray more fervently for a building.  this particular one is the largest building in town, it’s sitting empty, and has been for 10yrs.  The owner is a guy from Kiev, who owns several buildings in town, and we were told ‘may’ be willing to sell.  It is a huge building, two story, and needing a ton of work.  The vision?  A family center, smack dab downtown in the center.  I’m just going to lay this out before you, to begin praying for us, and this venture:

dsc00227.JPG

Purpose of the Family Center: to promote a wholesome place of entertainment and ministry center to care for the spiritual needs of the community.  This will not be a church building, but a place of direct outreach and service.  I would like to see an internet cafe, and non-alcoholic bar (possibly some food), an indoor skating/hockey rink (large enough upstairs), stage/concert area, a couple offices, bathrooms, pool tables/ping pong.

side-view-of-building.jpg

The biggest thing in Ukraine right now is bowling, don’t ask me why, it’s new here and they love it, maybe down the road as an option.  Daniel, Jon and other leaders here have similar desires, how it will all shake out we’re not quite sure, but pray for us would you.  This building is very big, and without ANY other forms of competition in the area (besides traditional bars) for the 2000 students in town, and virtually no place to get food (I do hear plans of more food coming though) or sit and have coffee with the wife, this would be an amazing lighthouse, staffed by local Christians for the purpose of building relationships and advancing God’s Kingdom.

street-view.JPG

Ok, there you have it, in a nutshell.  There is no way we can afford the building, I’m sure it will be in the 300-500k range to purchase, and require another 100k to fix up properly.  I’m drawn to believe God for it, He certainly would get the glory for it this way, we can’t do it on our own!.  The good news of Christ would be established in a visible, and long term, relevant manner.  None of us here desire a tradional ‘church building’, we want a place to reach folks where they are, and build relationships.  The building however could be used for multipurpose events and by the believers in the community as a by-product.  Although it may be terribly difficult, I desire to submit a business plan that is economically viable, even though we may need regular ‘help’ to keep this type of ministry afloat, I believe there is enough economic opportunity through the various services the center could provide to sustain itself.  The big item for prayer is for the owner, that when we approach him, God moves his heart and this becomes a reality, either by a drastsically reduced price, or providing the funds from the network of friends and churches.  It’s not the only building possibility, but in my small mind it’s the best and would accomplish so many things… Here we go, believing God and a little bit crazy.

yuri-bye.jpg

Our college students that were working on our house are offiically finished… the job isn’t finished but we needed to let them go.  It was cool to have Yuri (pictured in middle holding Clark) want a picture of our family before leaving, they are good kids and Yuri just joined the army.  I told him we’d have him back in a few weeks for some ping-pong and it wasn’t a last good bye.  It’s neat to think they were able to watch a big crazy American family for 3-4 months up close, I can’t imagine what they were thinking, but I pray God will work in their lives, the army is a place of intensified immorality.

Love to friends and family-
