Wintry Wonderland

These guys couldn't pass up decorating a Christmas tree - we had a merry old time.

I love how Ukrainians still pull their kids around on sleds.  If you squint a bit, our downtown can feel like a 50’s Christmas card around 3pm as parents tow their kids from daycare on old wooden, steel runner sleds.

They rarely plow the streets, you just follow the ruts.  I like my town, it’s become much smaller in my mind since opening the Cafe.  There’s only a handful of business owners, and the rest work for the town.  It’s amazing how many government paid positions exist here in a small little town – remnants of socialism hard to shake when it employs the masses.

We’ve decided to close for the winter on Tuesdays.  Our students still come and hang out in the afternoons, but the Cafe itself is closed to the public.  It’s seems like a random thing, but our Tuesdays are continually the worst business days for us and we’re looking to trim down for the wintry months as our losses increase with higher heating costs.   We love providing a cozy warm, fire lit haven for the snow-trodder.

Today, while closed, Deb, Lana and several students who were lured in by the Christmas spirit on the main floor helped decorate the Cafe.

This is our 3rd Christmas downtown.   It may not seem much to the westerner, but in our cold and rather colorless town, it’s like stepping into a wonderland to most.  We’ll be spending a lot of time down there this winter – it’s warmer than our house and has more food!

This year we’re thinking about setting up a photography area as so many already make the Cafe a ‘selfie-center’, so take some photos professionally and use that to connect with more people – plus we have several aspiring photographers and some online courses started.

We received several nice comments from our Belarus update video.  Thank you for praying with us.  It’s been a challenging season, up and down emotions, some days feeling even under attack with odd feelings of depression.  We put together a proposal, outlining how we envision moving forward as we potentially meld together two worlds – we’ve submitted it for prayer and consideration with our friends in the US.

We have peace, not with our plan, but in Christ who is our hope – without His Spirit, His nearness, His joy, the best laid plans won’t accomplish anything eternal.

We, like you, simply want to position ourselves for God’s work – we want to be near the River in Ezekiel 47 where life flow, trees forge and healing leaves go to the Nations.   If that is sipping a hot chocolate with a friend who needs a listening ear, or launching out into something considered foolish – Jesus leads, we follow right?

Quick family update!  Bronwyn is doing well in Ethiopia.  She’s emailed a couple of time letting us know she’s doing well, loving the culture, people, and fresh fruit.  She is now about to embark on a journey to Kenya with a smaller group of 12.  They will leaving the comfort of their larger team and gone for 6-7 weeks.   They are ministering life in Jesus to Muslim communities, and she has never felt so out of place (being white).   She and her friend have been leading various worship events as well, God’s using our little girl, sweet!   Her little sisters really miss her.

Broderic is entering finals week at Augustine College.  He’s been reading a lot, writing even more.  We’ve not talked a lot, but few nights ago were able to Skype.  He’s been learning Church history, pre-reformation first semester, visiting various Catholic, and Orthodox churches, even Coptic.  He was telling me about the many stimulating discussions, he really loves his professors.   He’s been studying the history of ‘veneration of saints’, Latin, theological traditions and his classes.  It’s been a perfect place for our logical, mindful son – feeding his faith, giving him some theological chops, but in a tight knit relational environment.   He arrives Dec 18, and will stay with us for 3 weeks, yeah!

We started laying down ice for our rink in the backyard – two fire truck loads and still no ice, it leaked through our cement.. we shall overcome.

Upcoming Events for Prayer:

  • Widows Outreach, Dec 20th
  • Club 180 Christmas Outreach, Dec 21st
  • January we are hosting another Widows outreach from another town in partnership with friends from Kiev, cool!

A few have asked about year end giving and if tax deductible.  Yes!  By using our new Lighthouse Ukraine website for donations (Any Credit Card or Paypal) it goes directly to our sending church for registered charitable giving.

If you don’t care about the tax receipt, you can use give right here on our blog site.

Thank you for partnering with us!

Minsk Video Update & Prayer Request

Thank you for taking a moment to watch this and stand with our family in prayer – as well pray for the Ministries and precious families represented in Belarus and the US who have poured their lives into this work.

In case any Ukrainian friends watch and wonder, we are NOT planning to move to Belarus but believe we could in the near future be dividing our time between Minsk and Rzyschiv.

img_2160The Lighthouse Cafe and student ministries here will by God’s grace continue to grow and possibly become a model for future Cafe’s, skateparks, and whatever else the Lord directs for reaching this generation with the love of God.  I love the model of the Cafe, it’s a natural connection with the community, allows us to be salt and light on so many levels.   We continue to learn what not to do, and I think we could reproduce this in many more places.

We just returned from Kiev, purchasing 40 super soft warm blankets as gift for our Widows Ministry.  We will hosting a special party for the dear ladies in a couple of weeks, surprising them with this gift.  The Cafe continues to be warm, full of life and love.  We are trimming back winter hours to 6 days a week, and opening a bit later now 12p – 9p daily, closed on Tuesdays.  It’s getting dark out by 4pm, and we’re getting ready for the temps to really drop.  We are getting ready to decorate the Cafe for Christmas as well.  We just finished swapping out new front banners, nice warm hot chocolate and lattes (they were ice cream and cold things for summer).  Hopefuly we draw even more in.

img_2162We’re started hosting movie nights every Thursday night on the 2nd floor for students.  This is led by Max.  It’s a safe, clean, and warm place for kids to be themselves.  There’s nothing for them in this town, especially at night except an occasional dance.

Last week I visited one of the local colleges at night, they were hosting a ‘disco’ – loud music, dark room, flashing lights – it was a sad display to see half the student body in the yard smoking, and some drinking.  I’ve polled the students, they say 70% smoke, and I asked why they think this is so.  They said, “It makes us feel good, and for a moment we don’t think about our life.”  Several from Club 180 came to me, high fives and some hugs – the teachers monitoring were welcoming.  I pray for these students, they were made for so much more.  They, like all of us, need to experience the love of the Father.  Perfect peace, rest, acceptance and joy in Him.

Thank you for your support!

Moving With God

I don't think I was supposed to post this photo, but I like it. Some of the girls from Bible School last week.

I don’t consider myself a candidate for A.D.D., but I don’t like to sit still for too long.  My dear wife has learned to adapt to my spontaneity, and I think sometimes might even enjoy it.  Our new world of social media has a way of making it look like folks are really spontaneous, but I think most of us are fairly snug in our routines.

I just finished a fairly treacherous walk from our house down to the Cafe.  The melting snow has turned our path through the forest into a slippery mess.  I fell once, did the splits and found myself groaning inches above the mud.   It had to be a funny, albeit sad sight.   It got me thinking about movement – walking and moving is so healthy.

I think God is constantly in motion, engaging, communicating, working, active.   We need to be still, but I think more to stay attuned to His ‘dynamic-ness’ than to simply learn to relax.   Rest is in Him, not in rest itself.

Yesterday I finally produced a flower in my Latte.. I'm retiring now.

Tomorrow we’re taking a group of our Club 180 students to Kiev for a unique Christian event called  “Steiger.”  It will be an all day event for youth capped by a concert in the evening.  It’s a bit like Acquire the Fire from what I’ve gathered – it will be energetic, filled with multimedia, guest speakers and from my visit with the leader, purposefully Gospel focused.

The cool thing is that many of the youth are 1st generation believers.  Thanks to a generous family (Go Canada!) the students are sponsored – their $10 entrance tickets have all been sponsored.  $10 is a huge amount of money for a Ukrainian student.

We absolutely love this little beast. Claire this morning was watching youtube videos of baby's laughing - all we could see was her little 'pretty' sticking up.

Tomorrow evening I’ll be hopping on a plan for Minsk for some meetings.   Members of our support team already know a little of what is taking place – but we are talking and praying with leaders from both Minsk and the US who founded the Bible School about deeper involvement.   We love how God has connected our hearts in the past year and continues to surprise us!

Please pray for the next few days as we seek His ultimate council and direction.  God is opening the type of doors we couldn’t have imagined, that could accelerate reaching this generation in Post Soviet culture in some amazing new ways.

God is moving.  We have to stay fluid with Him.  This is true for our personal lives, to keep a soft heart, to remain open to His Spirit and seek Him.   This is true for church history – what serves us to stay ‘connected’ to Jesus doesn’t always serve us down the road.  The very things that helped to produce life can so quickly turn on us, become idols and lead us into dry places.

Even God’s Word, when not centered on the person of Jesus can become a instrument of death in our lives.   The Jewish leaders of Jesus days thought they could actually find life in the letters and words themselves, rejecting the author of Life right smack in front of them!  Nothing outside of Jesus Christ will bring life.

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.  1 John 5:12

Where are you in your journey with Jesus?  Are you drinking from old cisterns?  Do you live with only fading memories of His presence from past moments?  Head towards the stream of Life.  There’s refreshing for your parched soul.  He’s near, not too far off – just start moving, and looking to the One who gave it all.

I stole this photo from one of the boys Instagram - they are taking some nice ones lately.

Thank you for your support!  It’s already become pretty chilly, we had our first snow last week and now we all monitor our heating costs quite closely.  The cafe has been nicely full, but some days quite empty depending on the weather.   Our Tiramisu has become quite popular, our City government put in an official order for their next meeting!

Remember to check out our new Lighthouse Site – I see many have visited, but we’ll keep posting stuff there too!  Also share it to your churches and friends, we are believing God for more partners this coming year as doors open and needs increase for the Gospel in post soviet culture  – www.lighthouseukraine.com

Minsk Week Update

We’re in day 5 of 7 with the team in town.  Group of 14, mostly 1st year Bible College students.  The classes have gone well.  We’ve had Andrei Murzin, Kelly Hoodikoff, and a few local missionaries/youth workers share.  I’ve been working my way through the topic, “The Character and Nature of God” which is always a challenge – such a weighty and powerful topic to survey, as a mere mortal, the immortal, invisible, immeasurable God.

How can we know Him really?  We’ve talked about creation, how it declares His power, creativity, beauty and so much more.  We’ve talked about how God has revealed much of His nature through relationships themselves, the nature of love, family, and unity as flowing from His triune nature.

God has ultimately come in 4k, HD reality in the form of Jesus Christ.  Christ, who existed before the world’s creation, who in fact created all things – He has come to display, to bear the image of God ultimately.  Only God gets to define His nature – not religion, not your pastor or church, not even the Bible accurately displays in full His nature outside of Jesus Christ – He’s the center of it all!

We will be wrapping up Thursday and Friday, saying goodbye to our friends on Saturday.  The best part of the week, in terms of our mission and heart for this generation, has been mixing the Minsk young people with our students here.   Last night we had an amazing time together, culminating in group prayer for one another.   For some, it was probably the first time they prayed in together in this type format – it didn’t feel forced, it felt like the Holy Spirit was touching hearts, assuring us of His love and presence – we are not alone, we have an amazing Father on our side.

Lord teach this generation Your incredible nature – Jesus, you gave it all for us.  It is finished!

Thank you for your prayer and support!   Next week we are taking 10 youth from our Club 180 group to Steiger, a day of Christian outreach to young people, prayer, worship and connection with our maker.   Pray for them and us!
