Gospel of John – Study is over!

After 35 weeks, our weekly bible study has come to a close.  It was a lot more challenging that I anticipated, but immensely rewarding.  God’s Word makes so much sense when you keep it in context, refuse to settle for trite answers, and read a lot of commentaries!

Gospel of John Study Notes

I’m attaching my study notes which I compiled over the course of the past 8 months.  They’re a result of personal study, greek & hebrew word studies, compilations from commentators and theologians such as Calvin, Clarke, Wesley, Barnes.  After a verse by verse format like this, I’m convinced anyone can study the Bible – it just takes discipline.  I am not a disciplined guy by nature, so no excused out there, get to work!

We’re going to take a break for a few weeks and praying now about the next study.  The group was amazing, consistently attending and we ended up with pretty much the same core we started with, minus our dear friend and brother Vlad.   Couldn’t have done it without some wonderful friends and translators – thanks to Sergei Susidko especially!

Besides starting another book, pray with us about the possibility of starting some evangelistic Bible Studies in surrounding villages.  This is on my heart, and I’m seriously asking for God to open some doors and confirm this direction.  Several of us in the church are sensing a time of transition, God is orchestrating some change and we’re looking forward to how things will progress this summer and fall.

Prodigal Bike Returns

Before the paint job

Last year we bought Brent and Tucker new bikes. Two weeks later, Brent’s bike was stolen and subsequently returned. Then again, two weeks ago, it went missing again. After a few days of ‘hoping’ it would turn up, we realized we needed more than hope. Brent and I prayed for the person who stole it, and that God would help us find it. We waited. Another week, nothing.

Then, yesterday Bogdon showed up at our door. For those of you that don’t know the history of the trampoline kids, Bogdon is the “Nicki Cruz” of the neighborhood. Between him and his younger brother Denise, trouble was always right behind them. Their rap sheet is a mile long, and we’ve learned to trust them as far as we could throw them, which is actually quite far because they are very skinny and under fed. Over the course of the last few years, Bogdon and I have come to understand one another. He doesn’t come around much anymore, too cool for the trampoline, and I pick him up around town and give him a lift where he’s going (monitoring his hands closely all the while).

Anyway, Bogdon. As many times he’s been involved in the actual theft or conspiracies therein at our place, he’s been instrumental in locating the goods. He’s not surrendered his life to the Lord, but I’m convinced he has taken steps toward reformation. He’s seen me lose my mind when I caught them red handed with springs from our trampoline, but he’s also enjoyed praise and ice cream when they’ve chosen rightly. I think he sees a difference. I think deep inside is a conscience flickering- there’s hope for that boy!

He shared with me that he saw Brent’s bike. My first thought was, “I’m sure you did see it, you probably stole it!” He then explained to me as best he could with my impaired Russian understanding, that the boy who did in fact steal the bike was Dema, a boy who lives a couple streets over. Dema had spray painted Brent’s black bike into a fiery red special. Dema is an aspiring chop shop artist. He removed the back breaks, changed the grips, and hoped nobody would notice. Ah, but that’s where Dema under-estimated our Nicki Cruz.

Bogdon had helped steal this bike the first time. Ingrained in his mind were the decals under the seat, and the green stripe on the seat. Dema in haste (or lack of money to buy enough paint) hadn’t sprayed enough over the decals, and you could still see the faint original stickers. Bogdon noticed, remembered, and something inside of him knew it was the right thing to tell us.

After bike was stolen and upgraded to Big Red!

I went last night to Dema’s house and saw the red bike. Nobody was home though, and neighbors were watching me closely. I thought, “Oh great, now if I take this bike they will think I’m stealing it…” I decided I would leave it and come back another time, but then the bus stops and out steps a tired looking middle aged women. “Are you Dema’s mother?” I asked. “Yes,” with a sigh of expectation she nodded. It’s as if she knew why I was there. I felt bad for her. I explained what had happened, and showed her the picture of Tucker’s identical bike, the decals and seat and compared it to her son’s new red bike. She just nodded in apathetic acceptance. I wanted to talk to her, pray for her- I felt terrible. I don’t think she knows what to do- no hope. She and her family need the love of Jesus Christ. Pray for them. I hope to re-engage them somehow.

So, thank you, Lord for showing again that you answer prayer. You answer prayer in the strangest of ways too. You use the least likely, and you are working in hearts that don’t appear open. Teach us to abound in love, and use every opportunity to represent you. And thank you for returning Brent’s bike, his new Big Red!

Boyz in da Zoo.

Clark and Noah wanted to stick their heads in there.T

Weather here has been amazing.  Love the spring in Ukraine.  Bright green and yellow fields, flowers in blossom, gardens freshly tilled.  Even the Dnepr River looks clean – just don’t look too close!

Thank you for praying for us this week.  We have returned from a quick 2 day trip to Poland for visas.  Deb received a 6 month visa, I didn’t bother spending the money as I get 90 days for free with a stamp at the border and hoping my permanent residence completes before then.  Really need that residency, have several things pending including my vehicle registration and Cafe about to open – pray the OVIR will do their job and process it, we’ve done 100% legally and they continue to drag their heels and come up with excuses.  In August it will have been a year that we started the process, there will be a big party at our house when it finishes!

Yesterday we took the kids (minus Bronwyn) to the Kiev Zoo.  It’s quite a sad zoo, notorious for the poor conditions the animals are kept in, but some wide open spaces to walk around and educational for the kids, especially the little ones.

Enjoying a day at the zoo - what a cute wife!

By the time we were finished, we had seen every character from the movie Madagascar and Bird from Angry Birds.  Interesting how the little ones reference from films and games.. shows us how many animal cartoon movies have been produced in the past 10yrs, even I envisioned Melman the Giraffe and that scary Peacock from Kung Fu Panda.
We are continuing to pray and consider moving our main church service downtown this fall.  Pray for Dan and I as we meet this week to talk about this some more.  I have some reservations and concerns, yet I also believe it’s time for real change and for His people to get out of the proverbial comfort zone and trust Him.

We are getting ready to finish the gospel of John over the next 2 Wednesdays.  We’ve finished the crucifixion and now the final stretch.  I’m planning to take a break for a few weeks and then start a study on a smaller book this summer.  I want to keep studying personally like this, it’s challenging and I’ve grown a lot from the John study and I hope the church has as well – God’s Word is life to our hungry souls!

Kitchen brick walls going up in Cafe.

For the past month the Cafe has not progressed much.  We are still waiting on some documents to finish the Gas which will connect the Pizza oven.   We’re also out of money, needing chairs and tables to finish the dining room area as well as kitchen cutlery/dishes etc.  We have been keeping Alyosha and Vitalik working as best we can, but we will have to lay them off for a while until more funds are available starting next week.   We need a miracle – so pray with us!

Thanks for checking in –
